Cha Cha Cha
A ‘cheeky’ dance, sexy and flirtatious and full of energy. It is a rhythmical Latin dance which originated in Cuba in the 1940’s and can be danced to authentic Latin music, or more contemporary Latin Pop or Rock. The music is energetic and with a steady beat.
Rumba
The Rumba is a sensual, stylised dance which tells a story of love between a man and a woman. Incorporating all the elements of teasing and withdrawal, it is considered the most sensuous of latin dances and is characterised by subtle hip movements and controlled spot turns. The fascinating rhythms and beautiful body lines make the Rumba one of the most popular ballroom latin dances.
Samba
The Samba is the famous high energy latin dance originating from Brazil’s Rio Carnival. It merges many South American dances and is very rhythmical with lots of hip action! It is danced to both modern and traditional music.
Jive
Jive is a fun, energetic dance. It was brought over from America has been initially developed from a dance called "Jitterburg" by eliminating all its acrobatic elements and polishing the technique. The Boogie, Rock & Roll and the American Swing also influenced this dance.
Paso Doble
The most dramatic of dances, this Latin American dance is based on the Spanish bullfight, with sharp movements and artistic hand lines. The characteristic of the Paso Doble is the ‘marching’ flavour given to the steps and the cape movements creating the tension between both dancers.
Waltz
Introduced to English society in the 19th century, the Waltz is the oldest of ballroom dances and perhaps the best loved. The Waltz is danced to romantic music and is a smooth and graceful flowing dance with a gentle “rise and fall” motion.
Slow Foxtrot
Originated in America during a New York show in 1914, the Foxtrot is a classic dance which often appeared in the old black and white movies. The Foxtrot has evolved into a dance of social elegance, characterised by smooth, graceful and gliding movements and enjoyed by people of all ages. Although often described as the most challenging of ballroom dances, if you can walk you can dance the Foxtrot!
Quickstep
The Quickstep evolved in the 1920s from a combination of the Foxtrot and the Charleston, as bands started to play music which was too quick to make large open leg movements which the Foxtrot required. This dance gradually evolved into a very dynamic one with a lot of movement on the dance floor, many advanced patterns include hops, runs, quick steps with a lot of momentum, and rotation. Characterised by the ‘slow, slow, quick, quick, slow’ steps, it is a light, fast paced, yet elegant dance.
Viennese Waltz
Ballroom Tango
Ballroom Tango is a dramatic and emotionally charged dance, adapted for the ballroom from the original Argentine Tango. Tango walks dominate the dance and with a dramatic style of their own are unlike the walks any of the other ballroom dances. Movements are sometimes slow and flowing, and other time sharp and staccato such as a quick foot flick or sharp head snap to promenade position.Tango music comes from a mixture of cultural influences including France, Spain, and Latin America.
Argentine Tango
